The Inspiration of Music

April 15th, 2010 by Alley

Growing up music has always played a very impactful role in my life. I could never truly figure out why it had such an impact on my life until recently.

Music has the capability of taking you out of reality. When I was younger I would go to concerts all the time. As I have grown up, it seems that concerts have taken a back seat in my life (because of finding the time to actually go).
I recently went to the Michael Buble concert, and realized that the concert was an escape from reality for me. For those couple of hours, the only thing that mattered was the music. I got so lost in the moment of enjoying the music, the connection with the artist, and the feelings that the music made me experience. The concert reminded me of what I had been missing for the last couple years, and why I missed it so much.

Through the years, I have found that music has been a huge bonding experience for my dad and me. He is blind, and for as long as I can remember he has taken me numerous times to concerts of my favorite artists. Mainly, the Backstreet Boys, and Goo Goo Dolls. It is an experience that no matter if he can see or not, we can share the events together, and experience the vacation from reality. Some of my best memories of my father and I, have taken place at concerts.

We live in such a fast society these days. It becomes hard to wind down, take a deep breath, relax, and take a break from everything that needs to get done in life (work, school, relationships, etc). It makes it easy to put your hobbies on the back burner.

I have learned my lesson! Never let your passions go. No matter how busy you may be. Find the time for yourself. It will only make you more successful in whatever your life goals may be!

To Please or Not to Please…THAT is the question.

March 4th, 2010 by Nikki

In my profession I have the good fortune of meeting new people every single day. I see people laugh, people cry, people excited, people sad. I also, see how their lives get hijacked, how their opinions and desires get denied and undone. I recognize this when it happens because it has happened to me too…it’s happened to all of us, it’s just usually to late by the time we realize it. I got so sick and tired of negative comments, and nobody believing in me, with a few exceptions(I can actually hear my mom say “honey, I believed in you” and then crying…). So what I did was make a list. I made a list every single time someone has something negative to say, whether it’s to me or someone else, and I worked down that list to prove everybody wrong. And then I realized, I was spending so much time trying to please everyone else, that I forgot what was important; me!  Sound selfish? It’s quite the contrary actually.I have done a lot of thinking about what it means to please. To please the fashion setters, we starve ourselves. To please men, we act according to how we THINK they want us to. Take the advice of someone who had to kiss a lot of frogs before she found her prince. If you have to alter yourself in any way to please him, HE IS NOT WORTH IT.

The act of pleasing makes everything murky. We lose track of ourselves. We stop uttering declaratory sentences. We stop directing our lives. We forget what we know. We start making everything OK, rather than real. Instead of trying to please, this is a challenge to provoke, to dare, to satisfy your own imagination and appetite. To take responsibility for who you are. So throw out your “list”, look yourself in the mirror every day, and say “I believe in you. I believe in your authenticity, your uniqueness, your intensity, and your passion. I believe you when you say you will change the world.” It may sound corny, but the day I threw out my list, and started “believing myself”, was the day my life changed.

Sexy, Sultry, Seductive eyes, in 4 easy steps!

February 17th, 2010 by Nikki

I’ve received so many emails asking how to get “come hither” eyes. Good news: It’s easier than you think!
Bad News: Most of you are making the same mistakes, but they’re totally fixable! Follow these 4 steps, and you’ll have the eyes he can’t possibly resist. (Trust us)

Step 1: Define your brows
The trend right now is shaped and well-groomed. To get this look, tweeze the hairs that are out of line with your arch. Fill in sparse spots with a brow pencil. Then set with Brow Fix.
Mistake not to make: Overpenciling. Oscar the Grouch is not sexy. Try not to look like him.

Step 2: Layer your shadow
Use two shades and you’ll look twice as sexy. Try brown, grey or silvery blue. (I’m loving our shade Graphite right now) Sweep a darker hue from lash lines up to creases; top with a lighter or shimery version. (Our Pewter Shimmer looks amazing over Graphite!)
Mistake not to make: Neglecting to blend. Stripes are never in season(on your eyes at least)

Step 3: Line you lids right
Apply a streak of pencil that matches your shadow on top and bottom lids; smudge. Feeling bold? Rim the inside of eyes with black.
Mistake not to make: Wow liner and wow lipstick. One is plenty.

Step 4: Lush up your lashes
Curl, apply mascara and wait 10 seconds for it to dry before adding more, so you don’t end up with tarantula eyes!
Mistake not to make: Ignoring bottom lashes. Show them some love!

I can’t wait to hear your success stories! Email them to me at nikki@fancyfacecosmetics.com

I’ve learned never to take anything for granted

January 27th, 2010 by Alley

Hello, Fancy Face Friends!  I hope you have been enjoying our website.  We have so much more exciting stuff in the works and cannot wait to share them with you.  We have been receiving an overwhelming response to the website and feel so blessed.  From the bottom of our hearts, we could never thank you enough.  You are truly making our dreams come true!

On a different note, I have received several e-mails regarding makeup advice.  Mainly, what color eye makeup is the best for different eye colors.  I was going to address that in this blog. However, after the recent events in Haiti I felt that I would rather discuss that issue and share my feelings and thoughts on that tragedy.  I promise in my next blog I will address the makeup advice you have been asking for.

After watching the news for the last week and following the Haiti tragedy I feel many different emotions as I’m sure most of you are.  To think that these people were making $2.00 a day for a full 8 hour plus work day before this earthquake blows my mind.  That is $14.00 a week!   I cannot help but think about the lifestyle in the U.S and so many things we take for granted, that we don’t even realize is a want rather than a need.

I can relate to that personally, as I’m sure many people can!  I’ve grown up getting my hair highlighted, haircuts every couple months, having a gym membership, having a personal trainer off and on, buying makeup throughout my life, going out to dinner once or more a week, going to concerts, etc.  Then I think about the people in Haiti….to us all those things I mentioned are a norm in the U.S.  I don’t own a house, have children to feed or take care of…how do the people in Haiti possibly live off $14.00 a week?  With no major bills or children, I probably spend $14.00 a day whether it is spent on gas, food, Starbucks, etc.  It truly blows my mind.  I know over the last week since this disaster it has truly made me put certain things in perspective.

It is so heartbreaking watching these people in their tents left with nothing from the quake.  Materially left with nothing (which I am sure whatever they did have before this tragedy took so much work and time to obtain) but even more heart wrenching is that so many lost their loved ones that can never be replaced. I am so close to my family, they are truly my best friends.  I cannot imagine having missing family members and not knowing where they were, or what happened to them with no closure. How do you recover from that?

I watch all these little children who lost their moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents…and a lot of them are so happy they are alive.  At the same time they are so heartbroken not knowing what happened to their family members.  It is so heart-wrenching.  These little children have so much inner-strength.

It is great to see the response from people in the United States.  It seems like people are truly stepping up and pulling together to help a community that really needs all the love, help, and support they can get.  My heart goes out to Haiti!  Let me know your thoughts on this situation…
